"I figured this album would be suited to be named Uranus since I kind of pulled it out of my ass.
Tracks 1,2,4,6,8 and 9 were all written, produced and recorded in two back-to-back recording sessions. Tracks 3, 5 and 7 were made in independent short sessions.
The opening track "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda" is a zany, acid-meltdown audio assault that kicks off the album with a whole bunch of weirdness. Much of the album's humor is foreshadowed here, albeit that the song has no coherent lyrics.
"Razorblades for Breakfast" continues the humor with a synth-driven monologue of diets that are not recommended by any official health agency. "We Are Going To Save The Rainforest" carries onward with a late 80's/early 90's television inspired jingle about a rag-tag group of hippies that are determined to change the world, despite having zero qualifications to do so. The more manic pace settles for the mind melding, sample heavy "Meditations of Aruna".
Track 5 is a cover of a song from Ocarina of Time, much of the music from that game has inspired various Soul Psych songs over the years. Track 3 "Razorblades for Breakfast" is meant to capture some of the humor that was displayed on Adult Swim when I was younger.
"Doxxed" is about a Portland band that exposed information of their fans and did not retract the info. "She Woulda Been" is about good intentions being the path to hell and how some people take what should be a good cause, or belief, and use it as a total power/ego trip.
"Heh?" is a brief psychedelic trip drizzled in incoherent squalls and sqeals. "Umbriel" is the first ever solo piano ballad published by Soul Psych.
The album was made using a Tascam 414 and an old MacBook. Almost all the music fit onto one single cassette tape. The choice to make each song fairly short was a stylistic one. The album started as a super short EP (like 5 minutes), but grew into a 9 track, 20 minute frantic rush.
The sessions were greatly inspired by OFF!, Todd Rundgren, Black Flag, Frank Zappa, heavyheavylowlow, Butthole Surfers, Mindless Self Indulgence and MYRRS.
To dispel any concerns once may have on this being a collaborative effort, it was recorded by three people: me, myself and I."
